Attempted Murder Suspect Charged In Shooting Laurel Police Officer (Update)

An attempted murder suspect from Laurel has been charged in connection with shooting an officer while serving an arrest warrant, authorities said.

Christopher Simms, 23, shot a Laurel Police officer while police were serving an arrest and search warrant in the 100 block of Bryan Court just after 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20, the department said.

The 35-year-old officer was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma for treatment and was released later the same day, the department said. His name was not released.

Simms was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges including attempted first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and intentionally causing injury to a law enforcement officer, the department said. 

He was already facing previous charges in connection with a shooting that happened on April 11, the department added.
